Home Call Forwarding Setup

Setting up call forwarding

This is the one step you do yourself — it takes about 60 seconds, and you only ever do it once. After this, everything else is automatic.

How it works

1

Your clients call your number — the same one they always have

2

If nobody answers after a few rings, the call automatically forwards to your Slatefield number

This is called conditional forwarding — unanswered calls forward, picked-up calls go through normally.

3

Your AI receptionist answers, captures the lead, and you get a text within seconds

How it works by phone type

The examples below use a placeholder number. Your actual Slatefield number only appears in your dashboard — don't forward to any number you find on this page.

Office or VoIP system (RingCentral, Weave, Grasshopper, etc.)

Forwarding lives in your system's admin portal — not on the phone itself. The steps are almost identical across every platform:

  1. Log into your phone system's admin portal

This is wherever you manage your account — usually app.ringcentral.com, weave.com, or your provider's website.

  2. Find "Call Handling" or "Call Forwarding"

It's usually under Settings → Phone → Call Handling, or similar. Look for "When unanswered" or "Overflow."

  3. Set "Forward when unanswered" to your Slatefield number

Enter your Slatefield number exactly as it appears in your setup email. Set the ring count to 3–4 rings before forwarding.

  4. Save and test

Call your own number and let it ring out. Slatefield should answer.

Not sure where to find it? Search Google for "[your phone system] forward unanswered calls" — every platform has a 2-minute support article for this exact setting.

Common questions

Will my clients know the call forwarded? expand_more

No. The forwarding is invisible to callers — they just hear your business name answered professionally. They don't see your Slatefield number or know a forward happened.

What if I pick up first? Does the AI still answer? expand_more

No. Conditional forwarding only kicks in when a call goes unanswered. If you pick up, the call is yours as normal. The AI only steps in when you can't.

How many rings before it forwards? expand_more

Usually 3–4 rings (about 20–25 seconds), depending on your carrier's default. For office/VoIP systems, you can set this exactly in your portal settings.

Does this work after hours and on weekends? expand_more

Yes — 24/7. Once forwarding is set up, it works around the clock. Calls at 10pm on a Sunday get answered the same as a Tuesday afternoon.

The code didn't work. What now? expand_more

Carrier codes occasionally vary by plan or region. Search "[your carrier] conditional call forwarding" — their support page has the exact code for your account. You can also email us at support@slatefieldai.com and we'll walk you through it.

How do I turn it off? expand_more

Cell phones: dial the cancel code for your carrier (Verizon: *73, AT&T/T-Mobile: ##004#). Office systems: go back to the same Call Handling setting and remove or disable the forward. Your regular voicemail resumes immediately.
